Message
from the President
Miles Carroll

The
severity of havoc placed upon our nation is terrible. But we, the American
people will rise to the challenge before us and be victorious. I
remember from junior high school civics lessons that during the Civil War,
it was also made known that a divided house will not stand; that we as
a country must be united.
As your CTEI president, I want you to know that I will endeavor to keep
CTEI united in our mission to providing quality professional development
for you the members. You must know though, this task requires all
of us to work together and become active in the association I often relay
to my students that, “all of us are smarter than one of us.” Likewise,
“All of us (CTEI members) can do more than one of us can do.”
At the time of this writing, President George W. Bush has just finished
his presentation to the joint session of Congress on Sept. 20th.
He was pursuing a unity of the American people; and a unity of other nations
to “rid the world of this terrorism.”
Approximately a quarter of a century ago, another president of the United
States was also calling upon the American people to become united when
Gerald R Ford stated, “Even though this is late in an election year, there
is no way we can go forward except together and no way anybody can win
except by serving the people’s urgent needs. We cannot stand still
or slip backwards. We must go forward now together.”
I look forward to serving your needs and going forward together with
each and every one of you during this year as your CTEI president.

Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher of the Year
Carolyn
Lage
| Timberline Jr./Sr. High School teacher Carolyn Lage has
been named Idaho Family and Consumer Science teacher of the year by the
Idaho Association of Family and Consumer Science Teachers at their early
meeting at the Professional-Technical Conference held in Boise.
Mrs. Lage
has taught Home Economics, Family and Consumer Science Economics
and Special Needs at Timberline High School in Weippe for the past 22 year!
She has also been named District 2 Outstanding Advisor for Family, Career
and Community Leaders of America. She is a national Master Advisor for
Family Career and Community Leaders of America.
In June Mrs. Lage represented Idaho along with Koni Lindley of Caldwell,
ID at the National Education Foundation For Economics in Denver Colorado.
The national conference was an opportunity for 250 national educators,
economic foundations, businesses and Dept. of Commerce program managers
to share techniques and resources for teaching consumer economics. As part
of the national meeting the National Academy of Integrative Learning shared
the latest in brain research and learning techniques. During the Professional
Technical Conference in Boise, the Idaho delegation shared the new teaching
techniques with workshops and new economic education materials.
"I am honored to be chosen but I feel much of the credit must go to
the strong and supportive staff we have at Timberline. I'm constantly inspired
by them, and to the students who present new insights and challenges each
year. It is important that educator continue to develop new skills, just
as we require our students to do. I wish I could go back and re-teach my
first classes with the new strategies and methods that I use now. As new
students fill my classroom I'm always touched with the sense of responsibility
I have (in preparing them for the workforce, family lives and as individuals.
I have the best subjects to teach because I know each student will someday
use the subject matter in my curriculum. I regret that the economic base
in this area does not allow many of the brightest and most talented students
that have graduated to stay in the community."
Mrs. Lage is a member of Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma for teachers
and is a member of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America
state advisory board Mrs. Lage "caught the bug" for being a teacher when
she was in high school and taught beginning sewing classes for the Twin
Falls Labor Center and the University of Idaho Extension Service. One of
her most fun and yet challenging classes was made up of the wives and daughters
of migratory workers who did not speak English. Mrs. Lage spoke French
and they spoke Spanish but both student and teacher became very good at
charades.
She graduated from the University of Idaho in 1969 with a Degree in
Extension and Education for Home Economics. While at the University she
was the wardrobe mistress for the U of I Drama Department. She continues
to make costumes for the high school drama club She has designed and sewn
western wear for many years as well as jockey pants and jackets for thoroughbred
horse racing at Longacres in Washington. She has been active in the
community Weippe Rodeo and has served as secretary of the Lewis and Clark
Bi-Centennial Committee. |

Thanks
for Scholarships
|
| From Lasinnda Mathewson, Marketing Teacher/DECA Advisor, Lewiston
High School, Member of IMEA: Thanks you for the scholarship from
our State organization. The $200 was immediately applied to my tuition
at the University of Idaho where I am working toward my Specialist's Degree
in Administration. This is in alignment with our State PTE Administrative
Institute. You financial support has been appreciated.
From Shelly Christensen, Technology education at Filer High School,
member of TEAI:
Thank you for the professional development grant. I traveled to Chico,
California for a videomaker workshop. I had a wonderful time and
learned even more about video editing on a computer than I already knew.
More importantly, I learned how to stream video over the web which was
my intention for going. I also made many contacts from all over the
U.S. who are also interested in video. We had a great time discussing
all of the ways a Videographer could survive in his/her own business.
This will be great information to share with my students.
From Jim Cooper, Automotive Technology education at Lewiston
High School: Thank you for the Scholarship money at the Summer Conference
for Professional Technical Educators. During the 9/11 disaster I
had planned to go to a meeting the 12th and that was canceled because of
flight restrictions. During the Teacher Conventions, in October,
I went with 2 other teachers to Moscow to the Technology Workshop. I took
it for credit and did receive 2 credits for the 15 hour workshop and the
individual project assignment. We had a great workshop and I can always
use the credits for the district and state certification! |
